About the lab

In the Emotion and Psychopathology (EmP) Lab at Rutgers University, we examine the intersection between various forms of psychopathology and problems with emotion dysregulation.

The primary focus of the lab has been on suicidal and self-injurious behaviors, borderline personality disorder, and eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa.  Another major focus of the lab involves examining these disorders in the context of the emotional cascade model, a theoretical model that Dr. Selby and colleagues have developed to explain how emotion dysregulation can lead to dysregulated behaviors such as self-injury and other behaviors.

When investigating these disorders we use a variety of methods including large dataset correlational methods, experimental methods and emotion inductions, experience sampling with the use of portable digital devices, and psychophysiological assessment.

Future directions of the lab include development of smartphone app treatments for these disorders based on our research.  Development of such programs would provide practical, widely accessible treatments for potential use in and out of clinical settings.  If you would like to learn more about this research or be involved in EmP Lab research in some way, please contact Professor Selby.
